Autobiography of a Yogi is a biography written by Paramahansa Yogananda (January 5, 1893–March 7, 1952) in 1946, in which he discusses his life story, and which introduced many westerners to meditation and yoga. It has since been translated into 25 languages, and the various editions published since its inception have sold over a million copies worldwide.

Movie of the Week

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a 2011 English-language drama/thriller film directed by David Fincher, adapted from Stieg Larsson's Swedish-language novel of the same name by Steven Zaillian. The film stars Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and tells the story of a man's mission to find out what has happened to a girl who has been missing for 40 years, and who may have been murdered.

Album of the Week

Helplessness Blues is the second studio album by Seattle, Washington-based folk band Fleet Foxes. It was released on May 3, 2011 as a follow-up to their eponymous 2008 Fleet Foxes album. Upon release, the album received universal acclaim from critics and was nominated for Best Folk Album for the 54th Grammy Awards.

Founded in 2008, Project 7 is the brainchild of founder Tyler Merrick, a.k.a. “the social capitalist”. He wanted to turn the 7 deadly sins upside down. For example, instead of focusing on a person who is gluttonous, focus on helping the person who has nothing to eat. Project 7’s goal is to make positive change in seven areas of global need.

Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays is a collection of essays and reportage by author, journalist and literary critic Christopher Hitchens. The title of the book is explained in the introduction, which informs the reader that "an antique saying has it that a man's life is incomplete unless or until he has tasted love, poverty, and war."

Movie of the Week

J. Edgar is a 2011 American biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood, from a script by Dustin Lance Black. The film focuses on the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover from the Palmer Raids onwards, including an examination of his private life as an alleged closeted (and chaste) homosexual.

Album of the Week

Velociraptor! is the fourth album by the British indie rock group Kasabian, released on 16 September 2011. The album has been met with generally positive reviews. On Metacritic, Velociraptor! has the band's highest rating with a score of 79 out of 100.

Website of the Week

Falling Whistles is a non-profit organization campaigning for peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Falling Whistles sells whistles for $34 to $104 to raise money for education, advocacy, and the rehabilitation of war-affected people in Congo. The organization got its name from a journal written by its founder, sharing his experiences during a trip to eastern Congo in 2008. During that trip, Falling Whistles' founder met a group of former child soldiers who told him that some children who are too young to carry weapons were sent into battle armed only with whistles. By wearing whistles, the campaign aims to use this weapon as a tool of protest and to raise awareness of the situation in Congo.

MARS MTV: Unplugged On VyRT

Happy Holidays!
Due to popular demand and some rather persistent tweets (you know who you are) we have decided to release the video for the award winning MTV Unplugged session we did not too long ago in NYC.
The plan was for the label to have it available on iTunes in time for the holidays but because of some technical snafus the deadline for delivery was missed and we were told it wouldn’t be ready until the end of January. No fun.
But, thankfully VyRT stepped in and offered to save the day.
For the very first time, VyRT is offering a Direct Download of the entire 30+ min show PLUS an extra unreleased version of ALIBI, some never before seen footage, all in glorious HD, AND on top of it – it’s here in time for the holidays as you requested! Ho Ho Ho!
This is a bit of an experiment so thanks for betting on us and trying out something new + different. We worked hard to make this extra special, I hope you enjoy it!

Movie of the Week

The Human Experience is a documentary film, produced by Grassroots Films, which tells the story of Jeffrey Azize and his travels, as he searches for answers to the question: what does it mean to be human? The film is divided into the three experiences, which take Jeffrey and his friends to New York, to Peru, and to Ghana. The Human Experience is rated PG-13.

Album of the Week

Yuck are an indie rockband that originated in London, England. The band features members Daniel Blumberg and Max Bloom, both of whom formerly played in the band Cajun Dance Party. The band's self-titled debut album was released through Fat Possum on 21 February 2011 in the United Kingdom. Critics have likened the band to Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth. The band's self-titled album was named one of the 10 Best Albums of 2011 by Rolling Stone.

In 1968, at the age of twenty-three, Karl Marlantes was dropped into the highland jungle of Vietnam, an inexperienced lieutenant in command of a platoon of forty Marines who would live or die by his decisions. Marlantes survived, but like many of his brothers in arms, he has spent the last forty years dealing with his war experience. In What It Is Like to Go to War, Marlantes takes a deeply personal and candid look at what it is like to experience the ordeal of combat, critically examining how we might better prepare our soldiers for war.

Movie of the Week

Contagion is a 2011 medical thriller disaster film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film has an ensemble cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Bryan Cranston. Contagion follows the rapid progress of a lethal indirect contact transmission virus (fomite transmission) that kills within days. As the fast-moving pandemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than does the virus itself. As the virus spreads around the world, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.

Album of the Week

w h o k i l l is the second studio release by Merrill Garbus' experimental solo-project tUnE-yArDs. It was released on 4AD Records on April 19, 2011. The album covers a "formidable range of genres and styles" including acoustic folk, rock, R&B, punk, funk, free jazz & Afro-beat. As on her first album, BiRd-BrAiNs, w h o k i l l relies on heavily layering looped sounds – notably vocals, drums & ukulele – which multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/composer, Garbus, uses to create her richly textured sound.

Thirty Seconds To Mars are now a
Guinness World Record Breaking Band!!

MARS hit 300 shows at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on December 7th, confirming them as the new holders of the record for most shows performed during a single album cycle ("This Is War"). The band has been on tour for two years. From Guinness World Records: Jared has said of the award: "We have been on the road for an incredible and insane two years and thought what better way to celebrate the end of this phenomenal journey than with a week of special shows in New York City. He continued: "We thought documenting this for posterity with Guinness World Records would be fun especially as we aren't any good at growing our fingernails very long or cultivating the world's largest squash".

Atlas Shrugged is a novel by Ayn Rand, first published in 1957 in the United States. Rand's fourth and last novel, it was also her longest, and the one she considered to be her magnum opus in the realm of fiction writing. Atlas Shrugged includes elements of mystery and science fiction, and it contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction.

Movie of the Week

Restrepo is a 2010 documentary film about the Afghanistan war, directed by American journalist Sebastian Junger and British/American photojournalist Tim Hetherington. The film explores the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair, embedded with the Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army in the Korengal Valley. The 2nd Platoon is depicted defending an Observation Post (OP) named OP Restrepo, for PFC Juan Sebastián Restrepo, a Colombian-born naturalized U.S. citizen platoon medic who was killed earlier in the campaign.

Album of the Week

Split the Atom is the debut full-length album by Dutch drum and bass trio Noisia. The album was released as a full-length CD as well as two double 12" EPs; the Vision EP includes four Drum and Bass tracks whilst the Division EP includes four Electro house/Breaks tracks.

Ahead of their performance at the Black Rabbit Music Festival, we sit down with Tomo Milicevic of 30 Seconds to Mars to find out what their plans are for the China tour, and why so many women toss their panties on stage during their performances.

You’re from LA but you have a sizable fan base in Europe. Why is it that so many American artists ignore the outside world?
We have always considered ourselves to be an international band. America is a big place, but the world as a whole is much, much bigger. We feel really lucky and grateful that we had the courage to think globally instead of just trying to stay in familiar, safe territory. Now we have the opportunity to come to so many wonderful and exciting places.

Is this your first time in China? What do you expect from this tour?
The first time we came to China was to shoot a music video for a song off of A Beautiful Lie called “From Yesterday.” To our knowledge, we were the first American rock band to shoot a video in its entirety in China. This is something that always made us proud. We are all lovers of Asian culture and we have always been very thankful and grateful that we were given the opportunity to shoot the video there in China. These will be the first shows we play in China and are very excited to finally come back and play shows for the Chinese audience. We expect people to let go and have the greatest night of their lives!

30 Seconds to Mars has the talent, looks and drama of a classic rock band. Ladies across China are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Is there anything you’d like to say to your adoring female fans?
We love you all!

It seems anyone with a computer is starting to mix their own music. How do you see the music world today and where do you see it going now that everyone with a laptop considers themselves a musician?
It’s really very exciting actually. We are on the verge of a new musical revolution. Because of the fact that anyone with the will and a desire to learn the craft of engineering sound can do so now for relatively little money, those doorways which were previously reserved for artists that have access to large and expensive studios are now open to a vast number of people who have talent and a voice to share with the world. In the coming years I expect we will see some exciting innovations in the way we listen to and experience music.

Have you ever thought of mixing Chinese elements into your music? The Chinese zither is quite nice and can be eerie and dark at times.
We are always looking for new ways to expand our sound so please point me in the direction of the nearest traditional Chinese musical instrument store!

Thirty Seconds To Mars release a digital EP today with 4 tracks from their MTV Unplugged performance. Like Frank Sinatra famously before him, Jared Leto has a cold. But the actor turned 30 Seconds To Mars frontman is soldiering on nevertheless in the basement of an Amsterdam interior design store. Last night over a Blumenthalian dinner (soup that looked like Heineken, a main course that looked like sweets, a dessert that looked like spaghetti Bolognese) in the WesterUnie nightclub he was unveiled to the assembled international men's grooming press as the face of new fragrance Hugo Just Different, along with a Jonas Åkerlund-directed TV advert. Here Leto talks to GQ.com about his David Fincher-directed Siegfried & Roy biopic, doing karaoke with Courtney Love and the strangest gift he's ever received from a fan...

What's the most important item on the 30 Seconds To Mars rider?
We have a very simple rider. It consists of: water, almond milk, fresh fruits and nuts and some ginger. Why ginger? It's good for your throat and voice. We slice it up. That's our big fancy rock'n'roll rider. [laughs]

What's your karaoke song?
I only did karaoke once in my life. It was with Courtney Love and it was a total disaster. She pulled me on stage in front of 500 people at a wedding. I'd never done karaoke before. I just looked at the list, I had no time to decide and the first song I saw was "Eye Of The Tiger". Everyone knows the melody a little bit [sings]: "Eye Of The Tiger, da-da-da-da-da-da…" but I didn't know any of the rest of the song. I'd never in my life read the words before. Terrible. I went down in flames. I never did it again. Fortunately it didn't scar me… I'm on stage most nights of the week so I don't really feel a need or desire to do karaoke so much.

Would you let one of your songs be used on Glee?
I don't know. Different strokes for different folks. I've never really thought about it before. But people asking to use your song is a compliment. It's nice if people ask to use your song. You have to make a decision as an artist how you feel about that. But there's certainly no requirement to let your song be used. Sometimes the songs are just used and you don't have much to say about it depending where it's used. But it's nicer when you're asked permission.

What's the strangest gift you've ever received from a fan?
We've gotten lots of really interesting gifts. I've been given all kinds of things: first-edition novels, ancient books. Someone gave me an old sword one time that was engraved with our lyrics. Lots of tattoos. A very common thing these days is people show up and they ask us in the band to sign with a Sharpie right on their skin and they go get it tattooed the next day. Then they'll show up at another show and they'll have their tattoo. That's always interesting...

Last night you (jokingly) mentioned the possibility of returning to acting in a David Fincher-directed biopic of Dominique Strauss-Kahn and on Twitter you've previously mentioned doing a film of Siegfried & Roy with the same director. Which is more likely to happen first?
[Laughs] I was stealing my own joke is what I was doing... I think Siegfried & Roy. By the way, I know I said it as a joke but I think it's a great idea. I need to send that to him, actually [reaches for BlackBerry]. Thanks for reminding me. Just as a joke. He'll laugh. He's in London right now shooting The Girl With The Pearl Necklace. No, Earring? Did you say that or did I? Rewind the tape...!

Fincher directed you in Fight Club, which is one of our all-time favourite films...
Really? Well, you know the first rule…

Fair enough. Have you been in a fight since then?
I may have. I may not have. I can't confirm or deny those allegations...

Do you ever think about mobilising your Twitter fans, Project Mayhem-style?
We could take over a small country somewhere maybe and just move in, yeah... It's nice to be able to communicate digitally with people around the world. Some of the social media networks have been a blessing because they've made that communication much easier and more immediate.

You're not often seen out in a suit - when was the last time you wore one?
When I shot the Hugo Just Different commercial! Before that? For a film I made called Mr Nobody that I shot in 2007. It's not a big part of my wardrobe but it's fun to wear. It's a rare occasion so I have fun with it.

What's your own grooming regime like?
I don't have one. Water is my cosmetic. I don't even use soap on my face. I just use water. I use shampoo a bit.

It must have been strange for you then appearing in the skincare-fixated American Psycho...
I was a big fan of the book years before the movie, and I remembered there is just an obsessive amount of grooming and skin products, the descriptions of all of the balms, salves, unguents... I travel too much to be carrying anything like that around anyway. The smaller your bathroom bag is, the better.

What's the biggest lesson you've learnt?
It's a cliché but that hard work pays off. Another is that in those moments of great challenge, your darkest days, usually the breakthrough or blessing is right around the corner.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
To think the opposite.

One of the top Google results for you is "Jared Leto Justin Bieber's dad". What's the best rumour you've heard about yourself?
Oh God, I've heard it all, pretty much. But the best one was probably that I was dead. That's always a good one.

Presumably you're denying it?
I am. The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated...

Jared Leto and Blink-182's Tom Delonge are among the rockers who have paid tribute to tragic Jackass star Ryan Dunn.

The TV prankster died in a high-speed car crash in Pennsylvania last week (20Jun11), plunging the showbiz world into mourning.

30 Seconds to Mars frontman Leto has honoured Dunn's memory by offering condolences to his loved ones and describing his passing as "an undefinable loss".

He tells Kerrang! magazine, "I always felt Ryan was part of the extended family. My experience with Ryan was that he was warm-hearted, fun, friendly and funny. He was a person everyone enjoyed being around, unpretentious, unaffected, real and true, and one loved by so, so many. An undefinable loss. The whole of the Mars family... send thoughts and support to his family and friends."

Andrew W.K., who shot a music video for his track We Want Fun with the Jackass cast, adds, "Ryan worked hard at living an awesome life... He lived the ultimate life and brought joy, delight and a sense of possibility to all sorts of people."

Blink-182 guitarist DeLonge insists Dunn's death should serve as a reminder to fans to live life to the fullest.

He says, "(Dunn) was a spitting image of anyone of many in my group of friends. Every skateboarder I knew had his same sense of humour and rebellion. Life is unpredictable and short. Make sure your life is worth watching as you watch it go by. R.I.P. Ryan."

Remember how you were stunned when you found out the hot guy from My So-Called Life had started fronting a band? And then you, the intrigued/obsessed little fanlet that you are, discovered aaaall about 30 Seconds to Mars, and your mind was thoroughly ROCKED to discover it WASN'T just some cornball concoction to keep cashing in on his good looks and growing fanbase but that this stuff was actually really really REALLY good?! And then how you were all, "OMG Jared Leto, you're so dreamy and talented, and I just want you to sing me to sleep every night and —*starts making out with framed picture*" RIGHT?? I mean, what? Uuuuuuuuh, me neither... STOP LOOKING AT ME.

ANYWAY, Jared is pulling a Franco and adding a few more slashes to his already super-hybridized job title: actor/singer/songwriter/MODEL/SPOKESMAN. Jared joins Orlando Bloom as the newest brand ambassador to HUGO BOSS. He's confirmed as the face of the label's newest male fragrance, HUGO Just Different, and according to the HUGO Create blog, Jared was chosen because his "lifestyle and ambitions embody the HUGO spirit. Always embarking on hugely diverse creative career paths, Jared has always lived his life with the spirit of originality." Which just reaffirms what we already know. And have known. And loved. For, like, six years. *enormous sigh heavy with longing* Jared spoke at the global press launch of Just Different in Amsterdam, Netherlands, last night clad in a sleek black HUGO suit, loosely knotted skinny tie, windswept locks, and just the right amount of scruff. #OMNOMNOM

If these Twitpics are even the slightest indication of what the ad campaign is going to look like when it rolls out in July, I don't think I'll be able to handle it. You should see how many paper towels I had to use to sop the drool out of the crevices in my keyboard (ew, 'crevices'). Yikes. The only question left unanswered is: WHAT does Jared have up his sleeve next?! Mmmmm... other than the dreeeeeeamiest arm/armpit/shoulder/neck/face/hair *makes out with framed photo all over again*

30 Seconds To Mars 'Thrilled' To Do 'MTV Unplugged'

30 Seconds to Mars have done a lot in the time since they released their This is War album — world tours, nocturnal bike rides, dirty music videos — but they've yet to do a proper episode of "MTV Unplugged." Until now, that is.

On Friday, 30STM taped what was, from the looks of things, a thoroughly epic installment of the long-running series. Though their "Unplugged" won't premiere until July, MTV Radio was on hand for the performance and spoke to frontman Jared Leto about being asked to participate and what it meant to him to contribute to the franchise's long and storied history.

"I think our generation, it was kind of a rite of passage, and if you were invited to do 'MTV Unplugged,' it certainly was a pretty big deal," Leto said. "And so many of our favorite bands did 'Unplugged' and still do it, so we were really thrilled to be asked."

Their "Unplugged" set featured standards like "Hurricane," "Kings and Queens" and "Closer to the Edge," plus a pair of iconic covers: the Police's "Message in a Bottle" and U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name," the latter of which Leto said holds a special place in his and his brother Shannon's hearts — and what better place to perform it than "Unplugged"?

"To be honest, [U2's] Joshua Tree was a big record," Leto said. "My brother had a copy of it, and he would open the windows of the apartment, and put the speaker in the windowsill, and it would hold the sill open, and we would be outside in the summer, listening to it.

"It's a big song for us, it's nostalgic, and we really had a good time working on it."

When 30 Seconds to Mars stopped by MuchMusic last week on their way to play a sold out show in Toronto we caught up with the guys and talked touring, music videos, wheat grass opium cookies (good with milk?) and concert themes.

There are a number of anomalies surrounding rock group 30 Seconds to Mars. They are fronted by singer and songwriter Jared Leto, who has successfully bridged the gap between his first public career as an actor and his work as a well-respected musician. The three American band members, consisting of Leto, his brother Shannon and Tomo Miličević, have become one of the biggest musical acts in Europe and Asia (though Miličević was born in Croatia he has lived in the states since childhood). They produce music video after music video, usually directed by Jared Leto under the pseudonym of Bartholomew Cubbins, which are artistic visual accomplishments that manage to stay away from the dreaded cheesy and pretentious feel that most short film music videos take on.

Lastly, in an industry that is over-saturated with musical acts and lacking in fan loyalty, 30STM have developed a relationship with their fans that is reminiscent of devotion last seen with the Kiss Army (30 Seconds to Mars have lovingly dubbed their fans ‘The Echelon’).

There were all sorts of highlights on Wednesday night's "American Idol," as the top five contestants went for broke, covering everyone from Lady Gaga to Montgomery Gentry with memorable results.

And all the vocal pyrotechnics kicked off with James Durbin's rousing, arena-ready take on 30 Seconds to Mars' "Closer to the Edge," which earned him high praise from judge Steven Tyler (a guy who knows a thing or two about filling arenas), who told him, point blank, "I think you kicked that song's ass."

Of course, while Durbin was powering through their song, 30 Seconds to Mars were somewhere between Montreal and Toronto on their never-ending Closer to the Edge Tour. And it turns out they had no idea the presumed "Idol" front-runner had decided to cover their song. Though, as frontman Jared Leto told MTV News hours after Durbin's performance, they're thrilled that he did. Because even if they've never actually seen "American Idol" themselves, they know about the amount of people who have.

"Wow, we didn't know that this was going to happen — we are probably the last few people on the planet who have never seen the show — but we are excited to have been able to share our song with so many people," Leto wrote in an e-mail. " 'Closer' has become more successful than we could have ever dreamed! [We're] very grateful."

Will Durbin's version of "Closer" — and his emotional take on the Harry Nilsson hit "Without You" — be enough to carry him on to the next round? We'll find out Thursday night (May 5), when the "American Idol" voting results are revealed. Who knows? Maybe 30 Seconds to Mars will even tune in.
